The University of Denver was founded in 1864 by John Evans, the territorial governor, as the Colorado Seminary, with Methodist backing but no religious test for admission. It was renamed in 1880. The 125-acre campus is about five miles south of downtown and is a designated arboretum; University Hall dates from 1890. Fall 2024 enrollment was roughly 12,800, split between about 6,600 undergraduates and 6,200 graduate students. Schools include the Daniels College of Business, Sturm College of Law, Morgridge College of Education, the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, the Lamont School of Music and the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science. The Cherrington Global Scholars program lets undergraduates study abroad at no cost beyond regular tuition, room and board. The Pioneers compete in NCAA Division I; the hockey program has won 11 national titles and skiing has won 24. The Pioneers nickname remains debated because of founder Evans's ties to the Sand Creek massacre.
