The University of Connecticut opened in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School, named for two benefactors, became a land-grant college in 1893, and took its present name in 1939. It is the state's only land-grant institution, with its main campus in Storrs. Wikipedia lists 33,554 students in 2024, including 25,304 undergraduates. Applications reached an all-time high for the Class of 2027, and acceptance rates in sources range from 52 to 56 percent depending on the year and the data provider. The Huskies compete in NCAA Division I and the university has won 23 NCAA championships; the mascot is Jonathan the Husky. UConn also operates its health centre in Farmington, which is listed separately. Third-party enrollment figures vary, with some sources citing roughly 28,000 to 30,000 for older years, so the 2024 Wikipedia figure is the newest located.
