The University of Chichester grew from a college for training schoolmasters set up in April 1839 as a memorial connected with Bishop William Otter, who had been the first Principal of King's College London. It moved to new buildings in October 1850 and was named Bishop Otter College. In 1977 it merged with Bognor Regis College of Education, founded in 1946 as an emergency teacher training college, to form the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education. It was University College Chichester from 2000 and became the University of Chichester in 2005, with campuses in Chichester and Bognor Regis.
