The University of Cambridge traces its founding to 1209, when scholars fleeing conflict with townspeople in Oxford settled in Cambridge, and it received a royal charter from King Henry III in 1231, granting it the right to confer degrees. Its first college, Peterhouse, was founded in 1284, and the university has since grown into a federation of 31 autonomous colleges, including Trinity College (founded 1546 by Henry VIII, the largest to this day) and Girton College (1869, the first for women). Cambridge admits students almost exclusively on academic achievement and intellectual promise, with most applicants required to sit a written admissions assessment alongside their application.
