UC Santa Barbara's roots run back to Anna S. C. Blake's manual training school of 1891, which the state took over in 1909 as the Santa Barbara State Normal School of Manual Art and Home Economics. It moved to the Riviera in 1913 and became Santa Barbara State College in 1935. The Regents established the Santa Barbara College of the University of California on July 1, 1944, and UCSB's own library notes that not everyone accepts the link to the Blake school. The campus moved to its present coastal site, a former military base, within a decade. UCSB was elected to the Association of American Universities in 1995. The Big West profile lists about 24,673 students, and the Gauchos have been in the Big West since its 1969 founding, the oldest member, with 66 regular-season titles.
