UCSF traces its start to Toland Medical College, founded in San Francisco in 1864 by the surgeon Hugh Toland with a first class of eight. In March 1873 its trustees transferred it to the Regents of the University of California, and it moved to Parnassus Heights in 1898. It gained administrative independence as a UC campus in 1964 under its own chancellor and took its current name in 1970. It is the one UC campus devoted solely to health sciences, with schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy plus a Graduate Division on the 107-acre Parnassus site, and a Mission Bay campus housing the Helen Diller cancer center, the Cardiovascular Research Institute and three Gladstone Institutes. A Mount Zion campus completes the set. College Navigator counts 3,007 students, none undergraduate. Each programme handles its own admissions.
