UC Merced is the tenth campus of the University of California, set in the San Joaquin Valley after the Regents weighed several sites there. It opened to graduate students in fall 2004 and to undergraduates in fall 2005, with an inaugural enrollment that UC Merced documents put at 825 full-time-equivalent undergraduates and 38 graduate students, and other accounts at about 875. Enrollment passed 5,000 in fall 2011, reached about 6,360 in 2014, 6,815 undergraduates in 2016 with a record first-year class of 2,049, and roughly 9,100 by fall 2023. The Legislative Analyst's Office says the campus went from 9 majors and 3 doctoral programmes in 2005 to 27 majors and 17 doctoral programmes in 2023. Freshmen apply through the shared UC application, and the system does not use test scores in admission decisions.
