University College, Bristol was founded in 1876, and only 99 students attended its first lecture. The king granted the charter creating the University of Bristol in December 1909, and Henry Wills became its first chancellor with Conwy Lloyd Morgan as first vice-chancellor. In October 1909 there were 288 undergraduates and 400 other students. After Wills died in 1911 his sons built the Wills Memorial Building in his memory, started in 1913 and finished in 1925. It now houses the School of Law and the Department of Earth Sciences and is used for degree ceremonies and exams.
