The University of Bridgeport started in 1927 as the Junior College of Connecticut, chartered by E. Everett Cortright, Alfred Fones and Sumner Simpson, and was the first junior college chartered in the northeastern United States. It became a four-year institution and took its present name in 1947, when it moved onto the former P. T. Barnum estate near Seaside Park. The campus on Long Island Sound includes the Marina Park Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Enrollment was 5,434 in fall 2018. It has the only Chinese medicine program in Connecticut and is one of few chiropractic schools on the East Coast. The Purple Knights compete in NCAA Division II in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, and the women's soccer team won the 2018 national title. Goodwin University took it over in January 2021, though it keeps its own name and board of trustees.
