The University of Birmingham Dubai was announced in 2017, welcomed its first students in September 2018, and was formally established in 2021 as a wholly-owned, directly managed campus of the University of Birmingham, whose main campus was founded in 1900 and ranks among the world's top 100 universities. It was the first UK Russell Group university, a group of 24 leading UK research-intensive universities, to open a campus in Dubai, giving it a distinctive standing among the UK branch campuses operating in the emirate. It delivers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in subjects including business, computer science, engineering and psychology, using the same faculty, curricula, assessments and degree certificates as the UK campus, meaning Dubai graduates receive degrees that are, on paper, identical to those awarded in Birmingham. The campus is licensed by the UAE Ministry of Education, and in 2026 it marked the parent university's 125-year milestone, underlining the institutional weight and long history behind the comparatively young Dubai operation.
