The University of Bedfordshire traces its academic roots to 1882 with the founding of Bedford Training College for Teachers, alongside a separate Luton lineage that began with Luton Modern School in 1908 and grew through Luton Technical Institute (1937) into Luton College of Technology. The Luton side gained university status in 1993 as the University of Luton, and in 2006 it merged with the Bedford campus of De Montfort University to form the University of Bedfordshire. The university is now the UK's largest provider of secondary physical education teachers, and its Secondary History programme trains teachers in practical classroom skills and subject knowledge spanning topics from the Crusades to African kingdoms.
