About

The University of Bath was granted university status by royal charter in 1966. Its roots lie in the Bristol Trade School, a technical school established in 1856, which became the Merchant Venturers' Technical College in 1885 and took in the Bath School of Pharmacy in 1929. By 1960 it was the Bristol College of Science and Technology and, after the 1963 Robbins Report, began seeking university status. With no suitable site in Bristol it moved to Claverton Down in Bath, where the first building was completed in 1965. The first year at Bath had 1,145 undergraduates, 115 postgraduates and 470 staff.
