The University of Alaska Fairbanks was founded in 1917 as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, when Alaska was still a territory, and held its first classes in 1922. It sits on the Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks and is the country's northernmost Land, Sea and Space Grant university; NASA gave it Space Grant status in 1991. Fall 2025 headcount was 7,857 across UA Fairbanks, up from 7,486 the previous fall, with 5,857 on the Troth Yeddha' campus and 4,801 enrolled through eCampus (students can be counted in more than one group). It also runs a Community and Technical College and a College of Indigenous Studies. Admission is relatively open, with College Board data showing about 62 percent of applicants admitted and test scores considered only if submitted.
