The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) traces its origins to 1954, when Anchorage Community College began offering evening classes at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Anchorage Senior College was established in 1971 and became a four-year Anchorage-based university in 1977; the community college and university merged in 1987 to form UAA.
