University College Birmingham became a separate College of Bakery, Catering, Domestic Science and Associated Studies under Birmingham City Council in 1957. It moved from Brasshouse Passage to its present site on Summer Row in 1967, and a new £1.5 million building there was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1968. In the 1980s it was renamed Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies, and it took its current name in 2007. It was awarded full university status in 2012, along with Newman University. It specialises in hospitality and culinary arts, hairdressing and beauty, tourism, business, sports and Early Years education.
