The United States Air Force Academy was established on April 1, 1954, when President Eisenhower signed the authorising legislation. The first class entered on July 11, 1955 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, cadets moved to the present site north of Colorado Springs on August 29, 1958, and the first class was commissioned on June 3, 1959. The campus covers about 18,500 acres on the east side of the Rampart Range at 7,258 feet, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill with Walter Netsch as lead architect; the Cadet Area became a National Historic Landmark in 2004. Enrollment was 4,094 cadets in 2024. Cadets receive tuition, room and board and a stipend, and commit to eight years of service after graduation. The Falcons field 27 varsity teams in NCAA Division I, football in the FBS, mostly in the Mountain West Conference.
