The United States Naval Academy is the federal undergraduate service academy of the US Navy and Marine Corps, on the Severn River in Annapolis, Maryland. It was founded as the Naval School on October 10, 1845, by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft on the grounds of the former Army post Fort Severn, and it adopted its present name in 1850. The 1850 year in the directory reflects the renaming, not the founding. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree. Bancroft Hall houses all midshipmen and is described as the largest college dormitory in the world. The academy competes in NCAA Division I in the Patriot League.
