Ulster University began in 1968 as the New University of Ulster at Coleraine, opening with 400 students including 40 postgraduates and 65 members of academic staff, at a time when its location was contested. Magee College in Derry joined it in 1969, formally in 1970. It had difficulty recruiting and reached only about 1,600 students by 1975. In 1984 the New University of Ulster merged with the Ulster Polytechnic to form the University of Ulster, with campuses at Coleraine, Jordanstown, Derry and Belfast, and it rebranded as Ulster University in October 2014.
