Trinity College was founded in May 1823 as Washington College and is the second-oldest college in Connecticut after Yale. Bishop Thomas Church Brownell opened it in 1824 with nine male students, and it took the name Trinity in 1845. It moved from downtown Hartford to its current hilltop campus between 1872 and 1878; William Burges drew an ambitious plan of which only the Long Walk was built, and Frederick Law Olmsted designed the Main Quad. Trinity became coeducational in 1969. About 2,200 undergraduates attended in spring 2022, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 9:1 and 41 majors on offer. Its Rome Campus, set up in 1970 on the Aventine Hill, serves as a study-abroad base, and Cinestudio is a student-run art cinema. The Bantams compete in NCAA Division III within the NESCAC and field 27 varsity teams in blue and gold.
