Trine University is a private university whose main campus covers about 450 acres in Angola, Indiana. It opened in 1884 as Tri-State Normal College, became Tri-State University in 1975, and took the name Trine University in 2008 to honor donors Ralph and Sheri Trine. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and gained regional accreditation in 1963. Engineering has been central since its early years, and engineering majors make up more than 40 percent of students on the Angola campus. The university offers more than 50 fields of study, with a student-to-faculty ratio of about 16:1. Beyond Angola it has a campus in Fort Wayne and education centers in Detroit, Phoenix and Reston, Virginia, with total enrollment across locations of roughly 14,500. Its Thunder teams compete in NCAA Division III, and the men's basketball team won the 2024 national title.
