Tougaloo College is a private historically Black college in the Tougaloo area of Jackson, Mississippi, affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). New York-based Christian missionaries founded it in 1869 on a former plantation to educate freed slaves and their descendants. It was chartered as Tougaloo University in 1871, served as a state-funded teacher training school from 1871 to 1892, and was renamed Tougaloo College in 1916. It later merged with Mount Hermon Female Seminary and Southern Christian Institute. It is known for civil rights activism, its Civil Rights Library and Archives, its art collection and its historic campus, and it established the Medgar Evers Home museum, now a national monument. First-year admission requires a 2.00 or better high school average and 16 units of secondary work.
