Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia, was chartered in 1950 by Primitive Baptists as Birdwood Junior College on the former winter estate of W. Cameron Forbes. Classes began in 1954 with nine students, and the first three graduates received degrees in 1956. After a 1966 board decision to admit students regardless of race, the school broke with the denomination, which gave up control in 1976 when it became Thomas County Community College. It went nonsectarian and independent in 1979, became Thomas College in 1986, offered its first four-year degrees in 1988, gained approval for graduate degrees in 1998 and took the Thomas University name in January 2000. The 1932 Forbes Building is still used. Thomas offers associate, bachelor's and master's degrees, and third-party data reports test scores as considered but not required for admission.
