Thomas Jefferson School of Law began in 1969 as the San Diego campus of Western State University College of Law, a Fullerton institution, offering evening J.D. study to working people. The San Diego branch won State Bar accreditation in 1973 and WASC accreditation in 1976, moved to Old Town in 1983, became independent in 1995 and was renamed, and received provisional ABA approval in 1996 and full approval in 2001. After a 2011 move to a new downtown building, the school ran into debt and low bar-passage trouble, and the ABA withdrew approval in December 2019, formally closing out its approval in August 2023 after a teach-out. The school now operates as a California-accredited law school, approved by the State Bar's Committee of Bar Examiners and WSCUC. It offers residential and online J.D. programmes, LL.M. degrees, and a summer abroad session in Nice, France.
