The Wright Institute is a graduate school of psychology on Durant Avenue in Berkeley. Its own site and Wikipedia date the founding to 1968, when Nevitt Sanford, co-author of The Authoritarian Personality, set it up with $25,000 from Hopkins Funds after an earlier attempt to teach his ideas at the Graduate Theological Union failed. Sanford had been dismissed from Berkeley in 1950 over the loyalty oath and was reinstated with back pay in 1959 after a California Supreme Court finding. The school now offers a Psy.D. in clinical psychology, with a three-year residency before dissertation and internship and full-time study only, and an M.A. in counseling psychology. It receives roughly 350 Psy.D. applications a year and the average entering class is 65. Students enter only in the fall trimester. There are no undergraduate programmes.
