The Islamia University of Bahawalpur grew out of the religious school Jamia Abbasia, set up in the princely state of Bahawalpur under Nawab Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi V in 1925 and modelled, according to university accounts, on Egypt's Al-Azhar. The institution was reorganised as Jamia Islamia in 1964 and became a chartered public university in 1975 under the Islamia University of Bahawalpur Act passed by the Punjab Assembly. Today it works across several campuses, with sites in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan and Liaquatpur, and a very large student body spread over on-campus and off-campus programmes. The Baghdad-ul-Jadid campus in Bahawalpur is the main seat, and the university draws many students from southern Punjab. Its offerings run from associate degree and BS programmes through MS/MPhil to doctoral study, and it holds a postal commemorative stamp issued for its centenary of origins. It remains a first stop for local families seeking public-sector higher education.
