The College of St. Scholastica is a private Roman Catholic Benedictine college in Duluth, Minnesota. Its roots lie in the Sacred Heart Institute, an academy started in 1892 by Scholastica Kerst and 28 sisters; the school added a junior college and took its current name in 1912. It became a four-year institution in 1924 and fully coeducational in 1969. The 186-acre campus overlooks Lake Superior and is centered on the castle-like Tower Hall. The college offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, with a strong emphasis on health science programs, and runs a study abroad program in Ireland. Its Saints athletic teams compete in NCAA Division III. The admissions office lists a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA for first-year applicants, makes ACT and SAT scores optional, and charges no application fee.
