The British University in Dubai (BUiD) was established as a not-for-profit, postgraduate-focused university in 2003 by law of the late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, with founding partners including the Al Maktoum Foundation, Dubai Holding, Rolls-Royce, the British Business Group, and Emirates NBD, giving it an unusually broad base of institutional and corporate backers from its earliest days. Unlike most UAE branch campuses, BUiD is a standalone institution built around partnerships with several UK Russell Group universities, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester, rather than being tied to a single overseas parent university, which lets it draw on academic input from multiple respected UK institutions. It offers undergraduate programmes in business, engineering and computer science, including the UAE's first BSc in Artificial Intelligence, alongside research-based master's, MBA, postgraduate diploma, and doctoral programmes in education, business, law, engineering, architecture and computer science, with a particular emphasis on research-oriented postgraduate study rather than large-scale undergraduate intake.
