Swansea University was established as the University College of Swansea in 1920, the fourth college of the University of Wales. King George V laid the foundation stone at Singleton Park on 19 July 1920. It opened with 89 students, 81 men and eight women, teaching science and engineering, with arts subjects added the following year. In 1947 there were only two permanent buildings on the campus, Singleton Abbey and the library. The campus sits beside the coast on the north of Swansea Bay, east of the Gower Peninsula, and a Bay Campus, home to the College of Engineering and the School of Management, opened in 2015.
