Stetson University began on November 5, 1883, when Henry A. DeLand and John Griffith opened DeLand Academy in a lecture room of the First Baptist Church in DeLand. DeLand Hall, finished in 1884, is regarded as the oldest building in continuous educational use in Florida. The school became DeLand College in 1885, then John B. Stetson University around 1889, and was shortened to Stetson University in 1951. It calls itself Florida's oldest private university. The main campus covers roughly 175 acres in DeLand, with the College of Law in Gulfport since 1954 and a Tampa site. About 3,670 students enroll, of whom 2,339 are undergraduates. The School of Music has held NASM accreditation since 1938, the business school is AACSB-accredited, and the Hatters compete in NCAA Division I in the ASUN Conference.
