St. Thomas University grew from the Universidad de Santo Tomas de Villanueva, founded in Havana in 1946 by American Augustinians. After the Castro government expelled them in 1961, several of the friars came to Miami and opened Biscayne College that year. The school took university status in 1984 with master's programmes and a law school, adopted its present name in remembrance of its Cuban roots, and came under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of Miami in 1988, making it the only Catholic archdiocesan university in Florida. The roughly 150-acre campus is in Miami Gardens. About 5,922 students enrolled in 2021, including 1,784 dual-enrollment high schoolers. It lists 23 undergraduate majors and the Benjamin L. Crump College of Law. The Bobcats play in the NAIA Sun Conference and field 28 varsity sports.
