St. Petersburg College opened in September 1927 as St. Petersburg Junior College, using an unused wing of the new St. Petersburg High School; the first class had 102 students and 14 faculty under George Lynch, and it was Florida's first two-year institution of higher learning. It gained full accreditation in 1931, became public in 1948, and in 2001 became the first two-year college in Florida to award bachelor's degrees. It now runs about ten campuses and learning sites across Pinellas County and has no residence halls. The University Partnership Center at the Seminole Campus offers 60 bachelor's and 39 graduate degrees with 16 partner institutions. About 23,500 undergraduates enrolled in fall 2022. The Titans compete in the NJCAA Region 8 Suncoast Conference, and the softball team played in the first Women's College World Series in 1969.
