St Mary's University is the oldest Catholic university in the UK. It was founded in 1850 as a teacher training college at Brook Green House in Hammersmith, on the initiative of Cardinal Wiseman, with room for 40 adult male students. In 1925 it moved to Twickenham after buying Strawberry Hill House, once the home of Horace Walpole, and built accommodation and classrooms for about 250 students. The campus is built on land that belonged to the Strawberry Hill estate, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
