Southern University Law Center is a public law school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, part of the historically Black Southern University System. The Louisiana State Board of Education authorized it in 1946-47 to provide legal education for Black students, and classes began in 1947 under first dean Aguinaldo Lenoir. It was later redesignated the Southern University Law Center. The school is accredited by the American Bar Association and teaches both Louisiana's civil law tradition and the common law used elsewhere in the United States. It offers the Juris Doctor, with a joint JD/MPA program, clinical programs such as criminal law and elder law, two legal journals and a London study-abroad program. Wikipedia reports about 800 full- and part-time students. Admission is centered on the LSAT and the undergraduate record, and a writing sample is part of a complete application.
