Southeastern University began in 1935 as the Alabama Shield of Faith Institute, opening on November 4 in a former high school building in New Brockton, Alabama, and became South-Eastern Bible Institute in 1936. Assemblies of God leaders ran it; it merged with a Georgia school in 1940, bought a site in Lakeland in 1946 and moved to Longfellow Boulevard in 1952. Four-year degrees arrived in 1956, regional accreditation in 1986, master's programmes in 2005 and doctorates in 2014. The campus covers about 88 acres in Lakeland, and the university reports roughly 10,500 students counting partner sites and online learners. It lists around 80 majors, a nursing programme and a competitive debate team. The Fire compete in the NAIA, mostly in the Sun Conference, and the baseball team won the NAIA national championship in 2018.
