Simmons University is a private university in Boston's Fenway neighborhood. It was founded in 1899 through a bequest from clothing manufacturer John Simmons, and the Massachusetts legislature chartered it as Simmons Female College on May 24, 1899, to prepare women for professional careers. It was known as Simmons College until 2018, when it reorganized and adopted its current name. Its undergraduate program remains a women-centered college, while graduate programs are coeducational and span nursing and health sciences, social work, library and information science, education and business. Simmons is test-optional for first-year applicants. The admission committee looks at the college-preparatory record and extracurricular and leadership activity, and an interview is highly recommended but not required. Applying through the Common Application is free.
