Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, was founded in 1873 by Luther Rice Gwaltney, pastor of Rome Baptist Church, as the Cherokee Baptist Female College. It was renamed Shorter College for Alfred and Martha Shorter, who paid for the first major buildings in 1877, and moved to its present campus west of the city in 1911. It was known as Shorter Female College until 1948 and as Shorter College until 2010. The college admitted only women for a long time, and the school says its population is now about half male. It is a Baptist institution competing in NCAA Division II. Wikipedia lists around 1,410 students, 1,306 of them undergraduates and 104 in postgraduate study, taught through six colleges and schools. The campus overlooks the city of Rome in northwest Georgia.
