Sheffield Hallam University traces its roots to 1843, when the Sheffield School of Design was founded, after lobbying by the artist Benjamin Haydon, to supply skilled designers to industry. It was renamed the Sheffield School of Art in 1850. Sheffield City Polytechnic became Sheffield Hallam University in 1992. The City Campus is in the city centre near the railway station, and the Collegiate Crescent Campus sits about two miles away on the Broomhall Estate, where Sheffield City Training College opened in 1905. It has 30,715 students, of whom 4,400 are international, and 708 courses.
