Seminole State College of Florida started as Seminole Junior College under a 1965 legislative charter, hired Earl Weldon as first president, and opened in August 1966 with about 800 students in portable classrooms on former citrus grove land near Sanford. It became Seminole Community College in 1975 and gained its present name in 2009 when it began offering bachelor's degrees; the first, in interior design, followed in 2010. Today it runs sites in Sanford, Oviedo, Altamonte Springs and Heathrow and counts 14,323 undergraduates in fall 2022. The Sanford campus has a planetarium and a fine arts theatre, and the Grindle Honors Institute serves high-achieving students. A DirectConnect agreement guarantees admission to the University of Central Florida for graduates. The Raiders play in the NJCAA Region 8 Mid-Florida Conference. The college's own catalogue says it now offers 11 bachelor's degrees.
