The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is a private art and design university founded in 1978, with classes starting in 1979. Its main campus is in historic downtown Savannah, Georgia, where it has restored many historic buildings. It also operates in Atlanta and has a study-abroad site in Lacoste, France, alongside online programs. Fall 2024 enrollment was about 18,550 students, including roughly 15,550 undergraduates. SCAD offers degrees in fields such as animation, film, fashion, architecture, graphic design and photography, and hosts events including the Savannah Film Festival and deFINE ART. The university has also faced criticism, including an AAUP censure over academic freedom and debate over its property-tax status.
