Santa Fe College was created by the Florida Legislature in 1965 to serve Alachua and Bradford counties and started classes in 1966 as Santa Fe Junior College, using the former Buchholz Junior/Senior High School building in Gainesville with 889 first-year students. Joseph Fordyce was the founding president. The Northwest Campus opened in 1972 on about 175 acres, and the college also runs centers in Starke, Archer, Keystone Heights, Alachua and downtown Gainesville. It adopted its current name in 2008 and now awards nine bachelor's degrees, among them nursing, clinical laboratory science and industrial biotechnology. The zoo animal technology programme trains students at an on-site teaching zoo. About 12,700 undergraduates enrolled in fall 2022. Santa Fe won the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence in 2015, and the Saints compete in NJCAA Region 8 in the Mid-Florida Conference.
