Saint Leo University traces its founding to 1889, when Benedictine sisters opened Holy Name Academy and the Benedictines created Saint Leo Abbey and its school north of Tampa. The college opened in 1890, spent decades as a high school from 1920 to 1959, and returned to college work afterward. It was Saint Leo College until it became a university in August 1999. The campus in St. Leo sits in a rural part of Pasco County, while a large share of students study through the Center for Online Learning, created in 1998, and regional education centers; distance learning for military personnel began in 1973. About 10,231 students were enrolled in 2023. The Lions play NCAA Division II in the Sunshine State Conference and won a 2016 national men's golf title. Its first doctoral programme, a Doctor of Business Administration, started in 2013.
