Rust College is a private historically Black college in Holly Springs, Mississippi, affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Northern missionaries of the Freedman's Aid Society founded it in 1866, making it one of the oldest colleges for African Americans in the country. It was chartered as Shaw University in 1870, renamed Rust University in 1892 to honor abolitionist Richard S. Rust, and became Rust College in 1915. It is the second-oldest private college in Mississippi. The roughly 126-acre campus includes Airliewood, a former plantation estate that housed Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War and now serves as the president's residence. The college is known for its 8-week module system and a women's basketball team that won a 1984 NCAA Division III title. The admissions page requires a 2.00 GPA and states test scores are not required.
