Royal Holloway grew out of Thomas Holloway's wish to give women a university education, paid for with the fortune he made from patent medicines. His £600,000 gift to the nation became the Founder's Building at Egham in Surrey, designed by William Henry Crossland on the model of the Château de Chambord. Construction ran from 1874 to 1881 and Queen Victoria opened it in 1886, permitting the use of "Royal" in the name. The building still houses a picture gallery of more than 70 Victorian works, a non-denominational chapel and a reading room open to students 24/7.
