Roosevelt University opened in 1945 after Edward J. Sparling, president of Central YMCA College in Chicago, resigned rather than hand his board demographic data on the student body, and faculty and students left with him. The new school started with no campus, library or endowment, was briefly called Thomas Jefferson College and was soon renamed Roosevelt College for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Since 1947 it has been based in the Auditorium Building, a landmark designed by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler. It merged with the Chicago Musical College in 1954, became a university in 1959 and opened a suburban branch in Schaumburg in 1978. Enrollment topped 6,000 by 1949, and today the university serves undergraduate and graduate students in the Loop. Admission for most programmes does not require SAT or ACT scores, and an official transcript is needed to enrol.
