Reinhardt University grew out of Reinhardt Academy, chartered in 1883 in Waleska, Georgia, by Atlanta lawyer Augustus M. Reinhardt and his brother-in-law John J. A. Sharp, with backing from the North Georgia Conference of the Methodist church. The aim was to give the poor children of Cherokee County schooling beyond the primary grades. Classes started in January 1884 with 12 students in an old cabinet and wood shop. The school later became Reinhardt Normal College, then a junior college, and eventually a four-year college, taking the university name later still. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and sits in Waleska, with its Cauble School of Nursing and Health Sciences in Jasper. The first teacher and president was the Reverend James T. Linn. Today Reinhardt is a private liberal arts-based comprehensive university in north Georgia.
