Regent's University London was established in 1984 as Regent's College, when Rockford College of Illinois took the Crown lease on the former South Villa estate in Regent's Park to run a study-abroad programme with a British focus. Bedford College had held the Inner Circle site since 1908 and vacated it after merging with Royal Holloway in 1985, leaving the academic buildings, including the Tate Library, for the new college. The campus sits inside Regent's Park, and the institution later grew from a study-abroad college into a university offering its own degrees.
