Queen's University Belfast draws on a tradition of learning going back to 1810 and the founding of the Belfast Academical Institution, and was founded by Royal Charter in 1845 as one of the three Queen's Colleges, with Cork and Galway, set up as a non-denominational alternative to the Anglican Trinity College Dublin. Its original building, completed in 1849, is now called the Lanyon Building after its architect Sir Charles Lanyon, who borrowed from the Gothic and Tudor character of Magdalen College, Oxford. The college opened with 23 professors and 343 students, and Queen's is now a member of the Russell Group.
