Queen Mary is the product of several older institutions: the London Hospital Medical College (1785), St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College (1843), Westfield College (1882) and East London College, later Queen Mary College (1887). The Queen Mary name honours Mary of Teck. Its base is Mile End in East London, the largest self-contained campus of any London-based Russell Group university, and it joined that group in August 2012. In 2024/25 it had 24,640 students, of whom 16,520 were undergraduates and 8,120 postgraduates.
