Queen Margaret University was established as the Edinburgh School of Cookery in 1875 by Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson, who wanted to give women educational opportunities and improve diets in working-class families. In January 2007 Queen Margaret University College was awarded full university status, and in autumn of that year it moved from several separate sites to a purpose-built campus on the edge of Musselburgh, next to the A1 east of Edinburgh.
