Polk State College was founded in 1964 as Polk Junior College, the first public higher education institution in Polk County, opening at a former World War II Army Air Force base in Bartow with nearly 1,200 students, twice the number expected. In 1966 ground was broken for the first permanent campus on the shores of Lake Elbert in Winter Haven, made possible by residents of the historic Pughsville neighborhood. Within a decade the campus had many buildings. It was Polk Community College from 1971 to 2009, then became Polk State College when it first offered a bachelor's programme. Winter Haven is its most populated campus, serving nearly 9,000 students, and the college reports more than 21,000 students across seven locations in 2023-24. The Polk State Center for Public Safety opened in Winter Haven in 2016. Wikipedia lists 8,180 undergraduates for fall 2022.
